A jury chaired by Mauricio Gil Cano and composed of Josefa Parra Ramos, poet and director of the Caballero Bonald Foundation; Ana Sofía Pérez-Bustamante Mourier, PhD in Spanish Literature, writer, and poet; José López Romero, professor of Language and Literature, storyteller, researcher, and critic; César Saldaña, general director of the Regulatory Council of Brandy de Jerez; and Francisco Javier Requejo Bohórquez, CEO of Sánchez Romate Hnos. S.A., decided to award the following prizes at the 14th “Cardenal Mendoza” International Microfiction Contest:
– First prize: “Noche jerezana,” by Roberto Marín Luque, a resident of Alcalá de Guadaira (Seville).
– Second prize: “Sobrevivir a papá” (Surviving Dad), written by Pedro Pablo López Pertíñez, from Granada.
– Third prize: “Instructions for Melancholy,” by Francisco Xavier Lama López, from Santiago de Compostela (La Coruña).
– Cardenal Mendoza Non Plus Ultra mention: “La travesía del holandés” (The Dutchman’s Journey), originally by Francisco C. Ayudarte Granados, from Motril (Granada).
A total of 1,983 entries were submitted to the competition from thirty-one countries: Spain, Germany, Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, the United States of America, France, Guatemala, Honduras, Italy, Kuwait, Mexico, Mozambique, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
