A jury chaired by writer Mauricio Gil Cano and composed of Josefa Parra Ramos, poet and director of the Caballero Bonald Foundation; Ana Sofía Pérez-Bustamante Mourier, professor of Spanish Literature at the UCA, writer, and deputy director of the Royal Hispanic American Academy; José López Romero, professor of Language and Literature, storyteller, researcher, and critic; and Evaristo Babé, president of the Regulatory Council of Brandy de Jerez, decided to award the following prizes at the 12th “Cardenal Mendoza” International Microfiction Contest:
First prize: “Ficciones,” an original work by Víctor Niso García, from Cáceres.
Second prize: “The Happiest Day of Your Life,” by Hermenegildo Altozano García-Figueras, a resident of Madrid.
Third prize: “Una nube buena,” by Elena Olivella of Barcelona.
Cardenal Mendoza Non Plus Ultra Mention: “Los trabajos,” originally by Javier Izcue Argandoña, from Pamplona.
Cardenal Mendoza Special Mention: “Milagro,” created by Nicolás Medina Cabrera, a resident of Alicante.
A total of 2,105 entries from thirty-six countries were submitted to the competition: Spain, Germany, Australia, Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Slovenia, the United States of America, France, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Italy, Morocco, Mexico, Nicaragua, the Netherlands, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, the Dominican Republic, Switzerland, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
