WHAT IT WILL BE

“The sun does not revolve around us; the world is full of things we cannot see—microscopic beings, quantum particles, stars, and galaxies whose light has not yet reached us. From a cruel process in which only the fittest survive, beauty and life emerge.”

The waiter raised his eyebrows and asked:

“Right. And to drink, what would you like?”

The woman stopped gazing at an imaginary horizon interrupted by buildings and the swings in the square.

“A brandy from Jerez, please.”

The waiter nodded and wiped the table with a cloth.

“It’s just that life is a MacGuffin, ma’am,” said the bartender, turning back as he seemed to be leaving. “What we think is important doesn’t really matter, but it keeps us entertained and helps move the plot of our lives forward.” The woman nodded. The bartender walked into the bar. The Universe continued on its course.
