The first prize has been increased to 2,000 euros for the winning micro-story
Following the success of the previous nine editions, the Sánchez Romate Hnos. winery is announcing the 10th Cardenal Mendoza International Microfiction Contest.
The aim of the Contest is to foster literary creativity in relation to Sherry brandy, a product highly appreciated around the world.
As on previous occasions, the theme is open, provided that the micro-story refers in some way to brandy from Jerez. Entries may not exceed 150 words—including the title—and must be submitted under a pseudonym.
The prize structure is as follows:
On this occasion, the First Prize will consist of 2,000 euros, a bottle of Cardenal Mendoza Non Plus Ultra brandy from Jerez, and a case of Romate reserve sherries.
The second-place winner will receive a prize of 700 euros, a bottle of Cardenal Mendoza Carta Real brandy from Jerez, and a case of Romate reserve sherries.
The Third Prize will consist of 600 euros, a bottle of Cardenal Mendoza Clásico brandy, and a case of Romate Reserve sherry. In addition, the jury will award the Cardenal Mendoza Non Plus Ultra mention to the micro-story that best enhances the image of sherry brandy; its author will receive as a trophy a bottle of the very aged and exclusive Cardenal Mendoza Non Plus Ultra sherry brandy and a case of sherry wines from the Romate special reserves.
All awards will be accompanied by their corresponding certificates.

The submission deadline is September 30, 2021, and the results will be announced during Cardenal Mendoza Golden Week, from October 25 to 31, on the website cardenalmendoza.com.
The previous edition, which received 1,990 entries from 30 countries, was won by the micro-story “Continuidad de las copas” by Argentine author Raúl Óscar Ifrán, another twist on a brilliant text by Julio Cortázar. Second prize went to the writer, also Argentine, Julio Accame for “Deshoras.” Author María Loreto Corbi won third prize with “Olor a brandy.” The Cardenal Mendoza Non Plus Ultra Special Mention, awarded to the micro-story that best enhances the image of Sherry brandy, went to “El primer beso” by Graci Bordón Aquiles.
