A jury chaired by Mauricio Gil Cano and composed of Josefa Parra Ramos, poet and director of the Caballero Bonald Foundation; Ana Sofía Pérez-Bustamante Mourier, professor of Spanish Literature at the UCA, writer, and deputy director of the Royal Hispanic American Academy; José López Romero, professor of Language and Literature, storyteller, and critic; and Evaristo Babé Romero, president of the Regulatory Council of Brandy de Jerez, decided to award the following prizes at the 11th “Cardenal Mendoza” International Microfiction Contest:

First prize: “Jaque de coz, created by Jorge Accame of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

  • Second prize: “Loba de mar, created by Miguel Ángel Escudero Eble, from Madrid.

  • Third prize: “(Irrational) Declaration of Love and Wine in an Elevator, by Miguel Barreras Alconchel, a resident of Valderrobres (Teruel).

  • Cardenal Mendoza Non Plus Ultra mention: “Madera vieja,” originally by Agustín Celis Sánchez, from Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz).

    A total of 1,737 entries were submitted to the competition from thirty-one countries: Spain, Germany, Austria, Andorra, Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, the United States of America, France, Guatemala, Honduras, Italy, Mexico, Montenegro, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the United Kingdom, the Dominican Republic, Switzerland, Turkey, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
