The bullet

At dusk, he received the call with the instructions. An urgent job. But he hated rushing. He laid out his suit on the bed. He polished his shoes and placed them in a row on the floor. He opened his briefcase, took out the gun and the ammunition. He removed the magazine and loaded the bullets one by one, gently, savoring every second of that captivating moment. Then he took the bottle of Jerez brandy from the bar cabinet and poured himself a glass. He admired the drink’s mahogany glow and toasted the new assignment. “A bullet to the temple and the body in the river”—that was how he’d been ordered to do it. He was a professional with years of experience. Nothing could go wrong…

When she came face to face with her victim’s deep eyes, she pressed the gun to her temple and the bullet vanished into the river.
