Press release
Few things get me to go out, but that kid was making me nervous. For the past seven nights, he’s been coming to the bench downstairs to rub his head and huff and puff. Today, tired of all his anxiety, I went down to sit next to him. It turns out he’s performing for the first time in a few days. Typical stage fright. Man, I’ve been there! I remember how hard it was for me when I showed up here, in front of so many people.
“But in the end,” I told him, “you realize that people don’t even notice. No one is really watching you.”
Once he was gone, I climbed onto the back of the bench to get back into my billboard. I smoothed out my suit, settled into the dark background, and raised the bottle of sherry brandy with a smile. Just as I said, they don’t even notice. Seven nights together and he hasn’t recognized me.
